Geeking For Good

I'm a social media and online community management geek girl who lives in Canberra and works for an Australian non-profit organisation. I blog about social media and non-profit technology at Geeking For Good, tweet as @lozz and tumble stuff I like at lozz.org. You can see my photos on Flickr and some of my videos on YouTube too.

Ben Self and building relationships online

Today I was fortunate to hear Ben Self speak in Canberra. It was a privilege to find out first hand about one of the biggest and most exciting online campaigns to date, which saw Barrack Obama elected as President of the United States.

For a taste of Ben’s presentation, view the short video: Building a movement with new technology

Key learnings from the Obama campaign:

  • Make it easy to get involved instantly
  • Effective email campaigns
  • Create bond with donors, likely to give more when they have buy-in
  • Do the fundamental things really well
  • Measure and systematically test everything

His advice? Be authentic, transparent, relevant, engaging, and interactive.

Technology is about focusing passion. First recognise or create that passion, then use technology to focus that passion.
